About New Mexico Technet

Who Are We?

New Mexico Technet, Inc. is a self-supporting, private, non-profit corporation, operating throughout New Mexico and on the Navajo Reservation to provide for the management of a statewide fiber optic computer network to serve the needs of the state of New Mexico, the state universities and statewide research, educational, and economic-development interests.

Technet was originally created by the State of New Mexico, the three state research universities (NMIMT, NMSU, UNM), and the national laboratories and research organizations (Sandia, Los Alamos, White Sands, Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Department of Energy, etc.) doing business in New Mexico.

Special Services for Education

Technet subsidizes the cost of Internet access to educators and educational institutions in New Mexico through its NEDCOMM program (New Mexico Network for Educational Communication). Teachers and Administrators in New Mexico primary and secondary schools are provided with 10 hours per month of free dial-in Internet access. Also provided is access to Guidance and Consulting databases, College Course Directories at the State universities, school administration information, teacher availability databases, bulletin board systems, Usenet News, etc.

Any K-12 school, public or private, can have dedicated Internet connections for the cost of the data circuit. No charges are added for Internet access.

Higher Education rates are based on the cost of the data circuit plus a small charge for Internet access.

Technet is also one of the primary sponsors of the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge. This is a school-year long program in which students design original scientific problems and solve them on supercomputers at our national labs.

What is your Acceptable Use Policy?

Internet Service Providers have Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) explaining what they consider unacceptable behavior for their account holders (see What is Spam, for instance). New Mexico Technet is no exception. It is not unusual for someone new to the Internet to commit a mistake out of ignorance. Please read the Acceptable Use Policy to save yourself from this embarrassment.
